History of the Kingswood Turnaround Achievement Awards

In 1992, Kingswood attended a conference in the United States where they learned about the Turnaround Achievement Awards Program; a program to recognize students for turning their lives around. In 1994, they initiated their own program in School District 18. They invited District 17 to participate in 1995.

Forever it seems, students have deservingly been awarded for academic, athletic, and artistic achievement. Now we are recognizing students who have struggled to turn their lives around. In the past twenty-eight years, students have been honored with an evening to mark their special accomplishments. The program reflects marked improvement in personal behavior, attitude, and academics. It demonstrates that there are students with serious educational and personal challenges who alter their future by changing their attitude.

1,045 students have been honoured in Districts 17 and 18 (now known as Anglophone West School District) over the past twenty-eight years and $520,000 in scholarship money has been awarded. It is Kingswood and the Turnaround Achievement Award Committee’s commitment to this program that makes it a success.

In Memory of Jenn Brewer

The Kingswood Family lost a beautiful young person Jenn Brewer in June who was killed in the horrific car accident on waterfront drive. Jenn worked at the service counter in the Entertainment Center for the last few years and was known for her kindness, beautiful smile and positive disposition. For myself she made my day every time I walked by the service counter and saw that big beautiful smile and friendly hello, I loved that greeting! All our staff are dealing with the loss of Jenn, it’s been hard on everyone. We are in touch with her family and are helping in any way we can.

I would like to start a scholarship of $1000 in the memory of Jenn Brewer for our TAA and have Jenn’s family member present it every year. We contacted Jenn’s mom and sister and they are absolutely honored by this recognition for Jenn. Jenn won’t be forgotten by her family at Kingswood! Let your thoughts and prayers be with Jenn and her Family going through this very difficult time!
